Manhattan Sideways stopped by recently to take some pictures, taste some food, and chat with us about what makes life at Patsy’s Italian Restaurant so special. We were more than happy to spend some time with them, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how beautifully everything turned out!

Hi. We were visiting NYC on the weekend of Dec. 11-13. I tried to make a reservation a few weeks in advance, but was told because it was Frank Sinatra's 100th anniversary birthday, that you were completely booked. We were meeting our friends in NYC that weekend, and or friend, Jim, happens to be related to Frank S. (second cousins, I believe), so I thought it would be fun for him to be at Patsy's the day of the anniversary. We couldn't get a reservation, but we did stop by to ask if we could have at least a drink at the bar to toast ol Frankie. At first they kept saying no, but I guess I begged for just a "quick little drink" and they finally relented. While we were having our drink at the bar, the chef came out and was being interviewed by a TV person. He also brought out a very nice cake with Happy 100th Blue Eyes on it. I told the chef that our friend was related to Frank and we were there for a quick toast. The chef was busy, but took a moment to tell Jim that he was happy to meet him. That was very nice of him, as it was a little acknowledgment for Jim as a relative of Franks. After all, how many people are actually related to Frank Sinatra! The chef also caught us as we were leaving the restaurant and gave us a little Frank Sinatra pin and asked us to come back.
I am so thankful for his bit of acknowledgment, as we were feeling as if we were not very welcome due to the restaurant being so busy. Still, it worked out - not as well as we had hoped, but none the less, we are thankful for the chef's attention. Had he not acknowledged our friend, I think it would have been extremely disappointing. So thank you to the chef! :)
We all live in California now, but hope to eat at Patsy's on our next visit to the city...

Deborah,

What Sal, the Chef and one of the owners did for you during Frank's birthday celebration, is the essence of Patsy's...you have become part of the "Patsy's" family. Every person who walks through the doors, is special to all at Patsy's! Their food is a wonderful bonus bonus!

Patsy's... just the Best of the Best. I now understand why Francis Albert, Frankie and Tina raved about this restaurant. When Frank learned of my west coast Palm Springs connection, he and cousin Sal treated me like La Famiglia. Pino and the staff are right on top of everything. Frank and Sal...I cannot wait to return. Buono Fortuna. GRAZIE !! 610-372-4750

My first visit was in 1947 as a youngster with my Uncle who was head of photography for Hearst.Moved to Miami 20 years ago and always spend one night when we return to NYC.Tonight I shared all my memories with my 9 year old Grandchild.Bottom line food like my grandmother cooked.Great place to go back in time and even better if you are Italian from the Bronx.

My husband & I met Sal at a wine tasting at the Montclair Golf Club in Montclair, N.J. a couple of months ago, when he prepared some of his wonderful dishes, & we had the opportunity to purchase his cookbook. I was particularly excdited to meet him, as my maternal grandmother's maiden name was Scognamiglio, & she emigrated to the U.S. from Naples, Italy in the early l900s. I showed Sal her immigration papers & explained that I had been told that the family changed the spelling of the last name at the time they came through Ellis Island. We both wondered if perhaps we ARE long lost cousins. Today, I will be calling the restaurant to make a reservation for myself, husband & two friends for June 9th, 2016. Am eager to experience Patsy's food again, & the restaurant that I've only heard wonderful things about. Lynn Baletti

My son is flying me to NYC for my first visit there. I have both your cookbooks and have really looked forward to eating at Patsys. I will arrive July 14, 2016 and stay at the London Hotel. I wonder is it too late to book a reservation at Patsys on the 15th?

Would reciprocate and send you my book Applied Insurance Analytics -- but it's not nearly as useful as yours!:)

Came in for lunch today, food was OUTSTANDING, as usual. I brought my sister and her son from Atlanta, they thought it was AMAZING. HOWEVER the highlight was I bought a cookbook for my daughter, asked if Sal would sign it. Not only did he come out and sign it, he took pictures with my daughter and my nephew. He then came out a second time from the kitchen to see how everything was. He is a class act! The wait staff was superb and Pino was awesome! Can't wait to come back.

We have dined at Patsy's dozens of times, including tonight. Whenever we go, I make a point of telling the people sitting at the table where I proposed to my girlfriend (now wife of 24 years) the story about how Tony Bennett was in the restaurant that evening, and gave my fiancé of three minutes a hug and a good luck kiss, and how Tommy Matola (whom I did not know at the time) invited us to his table for a bottle of Dom Perignon after witnessing my successful marriage proposal at the next table. The patron dining at the lucky table tonight was Tony Danza. Another great Patsy's memory to go with another spectacular Patsy's meal!

Hi Fred,

We went to Patsy's last year and were also traveling "lite", plus it was HOT outside, so we were in shorts. We felt under-dressed as the wait staff is dressed to the professional nines.

We arrived in NYC at night and immediately walked to Patsy's from our hotel. It was the one and only place that my mom, Kassie Sparaco wanted to go to and all she talked about, since her friend recommended it and she is a huge Frank Sinatra fan.

We apologized for being in shorts/Summer clothes, but our waiter immediately put us at ease and told us " next time" we could be dressed up. The other customers were dressed casual and a few well-dressed. The staff is beyond friendly, funny and the food is delicious!

Plus, we arrived late, but they seemed happy to accommodate us. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy your trip!

Having dinner at Patsy's for the first time tonight before our trip to see wicked on Broadway. Very excited to be having one of the best Italian meals in town, we are told. Can't wait to come back to Patsy's and to see Chef Sal once again. This time we are bringing my husband's brothers. We told them how wonderful the food and atmosphere are. The last time we were there Chef Sal came out, signed my husband's book and then they chatted about Sinatra, recipes and the restaurant business. My husband is a chef as well and they had much to talk about. We are so excited to celebrate the Christmas season and a few December birthday's at Patsy's!! See you soon!!!

On our last visit (which is ALWAYS wonderful) we couldn't help but notice that Jackie Mason was just two tables away. Afterward, we were outside waiting for a passing cab. After 5 minutes, one pulled up to discharge it's passengers. A rather distinguished looking gentleman got out, held the door for us and starting singing about the wonderfulness of Patsy's at the top of his lungs. I hope he had as great a time and meal as we did. Thank you, Sal, and the entire team. I tell EVERYONE at work about what a great place it is. And I keep the cookbook on my desk for casual reading. We can't say enough.

Chef Sal: thank you for making us feel so welcome yesterday when we stopped in for lunch. It was our first visit to Patsy's, but we guarantee you it will not be our last.

I had what I always have when I try out an Italian restaurant for the first time - spaghetti and meatballs - and my wife had the three cheese ravioli. The food was absolutely fantastic and our waiter was extremely courteous and efficient (it turns out that our waiter's in-laws are from our home town - Scranton, PA).

We enjoyed talking to you about Northeastern Pennsylvania, and we left with a jar of your famous tomato basil sauce to take home. We are going to tell all our friends about Patsy's, and we'll be back again soon. Thanks again for a wonderful dining experience.

Our first time visiting NYC (from California) and had a great dinner at Patsy's. Our son Santino ordered the spaghetti w/meatballs. Something as simple as a meatball tasted so good, moist and fresh. Everything was fantastic and the staff friendly. If we ever go back to NYC we're eating at Patsy's again. Sal, I gotta have that meatball recipe !

My wife Barbara and I will be going to Patsy’s tonight to celebrate our first date at this restaurant 49 years ago. Vinny was our waiter that night and we always request him each year when we visit NYC at Christmas time. The food is always fabulous, my mouth is watering right now. Sal always takes the time to come over and chat reminiscing about the “old days”

I’m not famousand not important. We now live in NC and get to the City four or five times a year now. We ALWAYS make a reservation at Patsy’s. I don’t know why, but we are always treated like we are familiar. It is nice to feel welcomed to a place that we enjoy for comfort food. We always leave feeling that Patsy’s appreciated our business. We always ask for the fried zucchini flowers as a starter, by the way. Sometimes we are very lucky and they have them- even though they are rarely on the
menu. NYC feels incomplete without dinner at Patsy’s.

I took my mother Anne to a revival of 42nd Street for her75th....she is the oldest living bobby soxer I know! She had asked if we could go to Patsys "Frank's favorite restaurant" so we did. I cannot tell you how kind this family was to her when they found out it was her birthday...she got an autographed cookbook and Sal took her on a tour of Franks private dining room not open to the public...where he often hosted private parties. This made her day! Mom passed a year ago today at 89 and I know this experience was one of her best memories ever! Grazia.....
